The Tennessean published the following article on the efforts of Middle Tennessee to support the Standing Rock Sioux after interviewing Mike Younger at length about the supply mission:
Concerned Citizens for a Safe Environment(www.ccsenow.org), a community-based group created to resist the unwanted construction of a 60,000 Horsepower compressor station utilizing 1940s-1960s era pipelines in the midst of a residential and agricultural community in Middle Tennessee, held a fundraising gala at Fontanel Mansion for the next phase of the legal battle against the pipeline operator. Tennessee Congressman Jim Cooper requested Mike Younger sit at his table. Mike took the opportunity to report to Representative Cooper the human rights abuses he witnessed only days before at Standing Rock at the hands of militarized state police abusing elders, women and children on behalf of oil & gas interests in North Dakota and a Governor with a stake in the pipeline.
Middle Tennessee in Solidarity With Standing Rock
On Monday October 17th 2016 a cargo of supplies left Middle Tennessee bound for the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation where indigenous tribal nations have gathered in greater numbers than any time since colonization to prevent the Dakota Access Pipeline from crossing the Missouri River upstream of their ancestral homelands. StandingRock.org
The cargo was gathered by the community of Middle Tennessee (which also faces unwanted fossil fuel infrastructure expansion) in solidarity with the #NODAPL water protectors. The cargo included 7 live hogs, 12 cases of water, hundreds of pounds of dry goods, thermal wear and winter camping supplies. The delivery is being made by Nashville-based singer/songwriter Mike Younger (www.mikeyounger.com) and Charles “Mac” Wilson, president of the Davidson County Council of Community Clubs.
In addition to the numerous material donations made by private citizens, the following organizations have made Tennessee’s contribution to the struggle in Standing Rock possible:
