The Enemy Within

And if they say there’s an enemy among us
well I guess that it must be true
but if you don’t believe the lies
it should come as no surprise
that enemy just might be you
they can build their wall a little higher
to block out where the light comes in
they can try, try, try, they can build it to the sky
but they will never beat the enemy within
And if they act like they’re doing you a favor
while you’re cleaning up the mess they made
but they’re happy to enjoy your labor
for less than anybody else gets paid
they can build their wall a little higher
to block out where the light comes in
they can try, try, try, they can build it to the sky
but they will never beat the enemy within
They steal from the mouths of babies
to feed a hungry war machine
and they don’t much care
who is killed and who is spared
just as long as the money’s all green
they can build their wall a little higher
to block out where the light comes in
they can try, try, try, they can build it to the sky
but they will never beat the enemy within
and if they fly a flag of insurrection
from high above their luxury yacht
I wouldn’t count on any moment of reflection
on what’s real and what is not
just let themn build their wall a little higher
to block out where the light comes in
they can try, try, try, they can build it to the sky
but they will never beat the enemy within
Hold The Line

Here in the twilight we share a destiny
bearing witness to a fever, a new reality
first it claims your soul and then they colonize your mind
that’s why I’m counting on you, counting on you to hold the line
the veil is lifted on what was once concealed
every lie exposed and every truth revealed
but justice is either crooked or blind
so now I’m counting on you, counting on you to hold the line
all along these city walls, all down these hallowed halls,
feel our foundation tremble and shake
but what’s to come of us if it should break?
A poisoned flower in the darkness grows
alongside a stream of bile that flows
spreading over the fields like tangled vine
that’s why I’m counting on you, counting on you to hold the line
the triggered masses, they gather at the gate
they stand united in their rage and their hate
you know they mean to drag us all back in time
that’s why I’m counting on you, counting on you to hold the line
All along these city walls, all down these hallowed halls
feel our foundation tremble and shake
but what’s to come of us if it should break?
It’s time to take this torch and light the signal fire
let everybody know our situation is dire
but if you do your part and I do mine
baby we can still, maybe we can still hold the line
RIP City

When it first came down to RIP city
it sure looked fine to me
but I was only seeing half the picture
just the part that I wanted to see
but it didn’t take long to notice
as I was out making the rounds
all of them broken people
scattered all over the ground
so if you make it all the way to RIP city
don’t you let it go to your head
don’t be surprised if you cut down to size
in the land of the living dead
I asked a man for directions
gave up my last cigarette
and he told me just to keep on walking
and I had a long way to go yet
they were shooting it out in the alley
over a cold scrap of meat
never saw so much heartache
and trouble down every street
so if you make it all the way to RIP city
don’t you let it go to your head
don’t be surprised if you’re cut down to size
in the land of the living dead
later on that same evening
I was packing up after my show
the set was tight but the pay was light
and I still had nowhere to go
so I asked the man at the counter
if there was any rooms left for me
he shook his head, “all full” he said
as the sign flashed vacancy
so if you make it all the way to RIP city
don’t you let it go to your head
don’t be surprised if you’re cut down to size
in the land of the living dead
so I grabbed my guitar and my suitcase
I was back out on the street again
a stranger in a stranger land
a creature without a friend
the night was full of faces
that gave me fevers and chills
so I tucked my tail and I raised my sail
and I headed on back to the hills
so if you make it all the way to RIP city
don’t you let it go to your head
don’t be surprised if you’re cut down to size
in the land of the living dead
Burning the Bigtop Down
Words and Music by Mike Younger
Sisters! Brothers! Boys and girls!
Come on and dream about a different world
And together we will find a better way
Where each and every person matters
In fancy clothes or dressed in tatters
And together we will find a better way
We’ve got people cashing in on the times
and people locked up for victimless crimes
people losing touch with what’s really real
And yes I feel In my heart
that it’s time for us to make brand new start
And together we’ve got to find a better way
Some have mountains of silver and gold
and some they just get left out in the cold
And together we will find a better way
Tired world, sick with greed
got six billion hungry mouths to feed
And together we will find a better way
Confusion and anger on every side
it’s getting to be there’s nowhere to hide
gonna take a miracle to make it heal
And yes I feel in my heart
that it’s time for us to make a brand new start
And together we’ve got to find a better way
I’m gonna make my way over to the riverside
And when the moon is high I’m gonna take it on a midnight ride
Cos every once in a while I need a little place to hide
When the weight of the world starts chewing me up inside
So if you call me up and I’m nowhere to be found
You’re gonna have to keep it together
til I get back on the merry-go-round
Soulsearching baby Soulsearching baby
Soulsearching down by the riverside
I’m gonna take my place down at the water’s edge
I wanna feel the wind on my face when I make my pledge
I wanna get in tune to higher frequency
where the cussing and the fussing and the fighting don’t follow me
So don’t you worry none if you can’t get me on the line
I’ll be over here by the water stepping out of my worried mind
Soulsearching baby, Soulsearching baby
Soulsearching down at the riverside
Just let my mind go drifting out where the river’s flowing
all the way down and out to the sea
Where a fog is lifting and a cool breeze blowing
Come along come along with me
Soulsearching baby, Soulsearching baby
Soulsearching down by the riverside
Come on baby don’t hang your head so low
The road is long and you’ve still got a ways to go
So spin the dial on your dashboard radio
If you can find the words
Come on baby don’t turn your face away
the night is young and you’ve still got a lot to say
We need to hear your voice more than ever today
Won’t you make yourself heard?
Cities burning on the hillside, angry seas begin to rise
Gotta fly above the smoke to see through the lies
This aint no time for laying low and letting things slide
Running back home for a place to hide – I need you by my side
It’s always somebody else’s problem
that’s how we got here
disposable nations and civilizations
with garbage piling up to our ears
Come on baby don’t walk away just yet
there aint no telling how dark this night could get
We’re gonna find out what we don’t know
about the point of no return
Fish are floating in the harbor, withered crops waste in the fields
Anyone with any sense would take to their heels
But this aint no time for laying low and letting things slide
Running back home for a place to hide
I need you by my side
Lord of the fleas
just keeping track of all the enemies
just pushing back on all the agencies and refugees
that don’t really fit in the fantasy
everybody make way
for a brand new day
better watch what you do
and mind what you say
Ah but fortunately
we’re all prepared for this catastrophe
we’ll all be spared of the blasphemy and the agony
we don’t even share the same reality
together we fall
divided we stand
that’s the way we do it in the promised land
Just listen to the people shouting out his name
it’s a bonafide calamity, a national shame
and burning the bigtop down is the name of the game
Here comes the money tree
he’s only looking out for you and me
I heard he’s handing out a subsidy as a gurantee
to all his friends and family
stealing from the poor just to give to the rich
and nobody seemed to notice when he made the switch
Just listen to the people shouting out his name
it’s a bonafide calamity, a national shame
and burning the bigtop down is the name of the game
Been a long and weary winter
waitin on the spring
for the flowers to be blooming
fot the little birds to sing
for the crickets and the butterflies
out across the open fields
on my way to greener pasture
baby with the frost at my heels
But I am just a stranger in this town
and I don’t even know my way around
So if you haven’t any other plans
I wish you’d take me by the hands
and be my ragtime angel
I’ll be your easy-rolling man
Seen the heart of the city
through a dirty looking glass
seen things that aint too pretty and man I nearly froze my
ask me one good question and I won’t tell you any lies
Well I’m on my way to glory
baby in the sweet by and by

I pulled into a truckstop
about this time yesterday
just to ask them for directions
and they sent me on my way
down a little country backroad
that’s how i ended up in here
Yes, I’m only passing through
but isure was fine to meet you my dear
I remember like it was yesterday
every song that old jukebox used to play
like strangers waiting on the same slow train
it was bound to carry each of us away
We were all just killing time and getting through the night
and all that really mattered was feeling alright
Things were simpler then
it was good enough just to find a friend
and in my mind I can still pretend
to bridge the distance that time will never mend
We were all just killing time and getting through the night
and all that really mattered was feeling alright
I often wonder what became of you
and if you ever really found what you were after
when you set out on your own
I sure wish you were sitting here with me
I sure could use a little company
and lately I’ve been feeling so far away from home
We used to all look out for each other
kind of like sisters and brothers
it seems so far away from me now
must have slipped right through my fingers somehow
We were all just killing time and getting through the night
and all that really mattered was feeling alright
I guess that I aint been so easy to find
the truth is I’ve been spending most of my time
chasing rainbows round a hairpin turn in the road
I sure wish you were sitting here with me
I sure could use a little company
and lately I’ve been feeling so far away from home
We were all just killing time and getting through the night
and all that really mattered was feeling alright
Baby what can I say? Please tell me do
for it seems I may never be over you
I can’t get no rest when the day is done
your memory follows wherever I run
You used to be my love not so long ago my dear
I still recall the tender words you used to whisper in my ear
I didn’t know what I had
I couldn’t see it then
What can I say?
I let you slip away
My beautiful friend
I was as rich as any king when I had nothing at all
you alone by my side holding me up so I wouldn’t fall
I didn’t know what I had
I couldn’t see it then
What can I say?
I let you slip away
My beautiful friend
Brother I you’re going down to the delta
Brother if you’re gonna ride the Mississippi Queen
do yourself a favor and heed what I tell you
beware them hoodoo women down in New Orleans
The lady with the beads aint nothin but a lowdown cheater
She says they bring good luck but that aint true
and Shanghai Lil aint nothin but a mean mistreater
she’ll drink up your blood and suck all the life out of you
Is it only my imagination?
Or is there more than meets the eye?
Ever since she crossed my path I had a strange sensation
can’t help but feeling like the devil’s on the rise
Shotgun Lou she’ll lead you to destruction
she’ll take you down to the snake-pit just to dance
then she’ll tempt and tease you with sweet seduction
and then she’ll laugh in your face and leave you lost in a trance
You can go right ahead and take your chances
you don’t have to take my advice
maybe it’s just the way she smiles when she dances
she’ll capture your soul if she catches your eye
Evangeline she stands upon the levee
waiting for her man to roll on in
and there’s a dark cloud hanging down low and heavy
cos somebody’s cooking up some mighty bad medicine
Is it only my imagination?
Or is there more than meets the eye?
Ever since she crossed my path I had a strange sensation
can’t help but feeling like the devil’s on the rise
Oh my darling Desdemona
why can’t we run away tonight?
why don’t we drive out to the desert
and leave this craziness behind?
there aint nothin here but ruins
of all the things that used to be
cheap imitations and illusions
are all that’s left for you and me
This old world keeps getting colder
getting colder by degree
just take a look over your shoulder
and baby tell me what you see
and then come and lay yourself beside me
and wrap me in your heart of gold
cos I beieve that you just might be
my only shelter from the cold
Oh my darling Desdemona
forever faithful and true
I’ve been shrouded with confusion
all along this avenue
these pretty lights are so deceiving
they never fail to leave me blue
but my heart’s still on my sleeve
and I still believe in you
This old world keeps getting colder
getting colder by degree
just take a look over your shoulder
and baby tell me what you see
and then come and lay yourself beside me
and wrap me in your heart of gold
cos I beieve that you just might be
my only shelter from the cold
